I can’t believe it’s August already! This was another no-shopping day until Pip wanted me to check Tractor Supply for cold medicine for cats (*head desk* one of our garage cats keeps sneezing lately; all I could find was immunity boost stuff) and I got in a walk around the park.

I filled my gas tank and hit the bank drive-thru on my way to visit my aunt. I picked up lunch from Subway on my way to mom’s.

I did two loads of laundry (both washed and dried, but only one folded), hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, placed two online orders (including Chewy, which will make the dogs happy), and scooped kitty litter. I made a ham steak with mashed potatoes and peas for supper.

I finished one Kindle cozy and started and finished another. And I spotted another fawn! Though not one of ours, sadly. This little guy was standing on the side of the road just outside the village where my mom lives and I spotted it on my way to her house. Thankfully it didn’t run into the road in front of me OR behind me (I checked the rearview mirror to make sure it stayed safe).

Temps started out at 50.0(F) and foggy. Another day I not only wore a sweatshirt out of the house, but a winter scarf and a jacket. Temps reached a glorious 75.6, with sunshine and a breeze. Honestly, a perfect day. If everyday could be like today I’d be so happy.

Mom Update:

The weather was so nice, Mom spent most of the day on the porch. more back here )

Photograph of a young Vietnamese couple in a sunny urban environment, with added text: Marriage of Convenience, at Fancake. A bride in a white dress and sunglasses leaves her groom behind at a bus stop. The bride is smiling and carrying a bouquet of lilies as she hikes up the long skirt of her dress and walks away. The groom is in the background, wearing a dark grey suit and sitting on a bench. He's blurry, but it looks like he might be smiling at her.
Our theme for August is marriage of convenience!

These partnerships are made for practical, political, or professional reasons rather than personal ones, but they rarely stay that way...

Since this is a Flashback Round where we revisit a theme from the early days of the comm—marriage of convenience was a Cupcake Round back in 2014—this month it doesn't matter if a work has already been recced for this theme, go ahead and rec it again!

The tag for this round is: theme: marriage of convenience

I had a pedicure this morning! I hit Agway (for dog treats) and Price Chopper (to pick up a couple things for mom) while I was downtown. I also picked up Chinese for lunch. I folded a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, paid some bills online, and scooped kitty litter.

I finished a Kindle cozy and started another. I also typed in 2,900 more words on my fic!

Temps started out at 68.0(F), which was amusing since the high for the day was supposed to be mid-60s. So imagine my surprise when I saw that the temp ~11:30am had dropped to 59! I saw it reach 61.5 in the afternoon before it started going back down again. (Even weirder, I just looked at TWC app and it says today’s high is supposed to be 86. Where did that come from?!!) To make the day even more fun, it rained off and on most of the day. We need the rain, but very dreary. (According to Pip, the rain gauge showed 1.5" of rain.)

Fandom: Star Wars
Pairings/Characters: Kleya Marki & Luthen Rael from the Andor series
Rating: K
Length: 7,108
Creator Links: FFN Profile
Theme: Working Together

Summary: He was never meant to survive. So why is she risking so much to save the man who killed her family?

Reccer's Notes: Kleya does her duty, as does Luthen, in aid of the rebellion. When their wishes and deeds clash, it takes forever and a day to reach an equilibrium. I especially enjoyed the scenario of two rebels diminishing status once their seminal work concludes, because how do they fit in now? And do they want to? Fine characterization, and a what-if that we hope happens, in some other timeline, perhaps.

I had a chiropractic appointment this morning. It was ~almost another no-shopping day, but I ended up stopping at the Feed Bag. I got in a walk around the park and I ran an errand for Pip, to pick up parts for the garage. (I rewarded myself with a McD’s smoothie.) I managed to get to mom’s around the usual time.

I washed and dried a load of whites (still need to be folded), hand-washed dishes, cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, placed an online order, and scooped kitty litter. I made open-faced tomato and cheese (melted under the broiler) sandwiches for my supper and grilled steak for Pip’s.

I started and finished the next book in the Inn at Holiday Bay Kindle cozy series, and then started the next. They’re just so easy to read. Very little thought involved. I also typed in 1,000 words on my ‘new’ fic! (Only ~ 9,000 left to go! *g*)

Temps started out at 61.3(F) (it felt cool enough for me to wear a sweatshirt when I left the house) and reached 91.6.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Stephen Caldwell, Elizabeth Weir, Laura Cadman, Radek Zelenka, Lindsay Novak - the usual Daedalus and Atlantis suspects.
Rating: Teen
Length: 100,449
Content Notes: Contains descriptions of serious injuries, animal attacks, extreme environmental conditions, violence, murder. No AO3 warnings apply.
Creator Links: Sholio on AO3, Sholio's old SGA website
Themes: Working together, Action/adventure, Competence, Hurt/comfort, Novel-length, Epic work, Genfic, Worldbuilding

Summary: When a scientific mission goes wrong, the Daedalus crashes on an ice planet along with Atlantis's top scientists and a ruthless saboteur. Will rescue come before injuries and the elements take their toll? Roughly season two era.

Reccer's Notes: This is a gripping, full-blown novel. The Daedalus crash-lands on a Gateless, uninhabited, icy planet while carrying a number of Atlantis personnel (Rodney, Radek, Elizabeth and Cadman), while back on Atlantis, realising something's gone badly wrong, John, Simpson, Carson, Lorne, et al try frantically to locate them, then to reach them by puddlejumper. It's a thriller about surviving both a disastrous crash and the freezing, inhospitable planet, plus searching for the saboteur or saboteurs who caused the crash. There's tons of detail about how the two groups separately work together to survive, and to find and reach the crashed ship, and then once the relief party arrives their troubles aren't over, with the saboteur still working against them and the logistics of only having puddlejumpers to perform a complex rescue. Sholio weaves it all together masterfully and it's an extremely good read with excellent worldbuilding, better than most pro thrillers. Highly recommended.

I've broken 75 books already! I'm close to my goal of 100, so maybe I will surpass that. Or, perhaps when I get to the end of one or two of the series I'm currently reading, I'll return to fanfic so I can complete my comment bingo card. Or maybe I'll catch up on all the tv I've been leaving hanging. (Resident Alien, I'm looking at you.)

Today was a no-shopping day!! But I got in a walk around the park while I was downtown. I spent time with mom and stopped at the library on the way home to return and pick up books. I did a load of dog sheets that got washed, dried and folded, hand-washed dishes, cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered.

I started and finished another Kindle cozy and finally started Heir, Apparently. I also dug through my hand-written WIPs to find something to work on and found a surprise FINISHED FIC in the Jessica Fletcher, Agent of SHIELD series! I gave it a read-through to remind myself what the heck I’d written and just need to type it in. (50 hand-written pages, so it will be ~10,000 words typed in.)

Temps started out at 68.5(F) and reached 90.3. It was hot. Today (Wednesday) is also supposed to be hot, but tomorrow (Thursday) we have 49% chance of rain with a high of 68. 68!! In July!!

I hit Walmart while I was downtown and got in a walk around the park. I stopped at Stewart’s for gas and milk on the way home. (One of the things I had to pick up was wasp/hornet spray because Pip discovered - by getting stung three times - a wasp nest in the roof area of the front porch, where Midnight spends a lot of time. (TBF, Pip never completely closed up that roof area, so it's really his own fault. o_O))

I got two loads of laundry washed, dried AND folded!!, hand-washed dishes, emptied the dishwasher, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter.

I posted my SFFest fic, finished the Clare Fergusson book, and talked to mom on the phone. We went to Texas Roadhouse for supper with friends!!!

Temps started out at 68.2(F) (and sticky) and reached 91.0.

I washed, dried and hung up Pip’s uniforms, hand-washed dishes, made myself French toast for breakfast, stirred up tuna salad (without the usual celery) and added sliced cucumber for lunch at mom’s, and scooped kitty litter. After my visit to mom I washed, dried and folded another load of laundry, hand-washed more dishes, did a load in the dishwasher and shaved.

I printed off my SFFest fic and gave it a re-read. I finished the Kindle cozy and started the next Clare Fergusson.

Temps started out at 70.2(F) and reached 82.4.

I hit Price Chopper (for just a few things) and the Bakery while I was downtown and got in a walk around the park.

I tossed a load of laundry into the washer, hand-washed dishes, cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, took the dogs for a walk, made more egg salad, and scooped kitty litter before I left for mom's. After I got home, I dried and folded the morning’s load and brought home a load of mom’s that also got washed, dried and folded! I also hand-washed more dishes and showered.

I added ~2,500 words to my [community profile] smallfandomfest fic to bring it to a tentative close, pending a re-read and edits, and finished a Kindle cozy and started another.

I didn’t have to cook supper because I saw another BBQ (it was ‘townwide garage sale’ day) and called Pip about it, so he got a rib dinner for his lunch and was still very full at supper time, so he mainly snacked. For myself I made a cheater loaded baked potato in the microwave. It was yummy.

Temps started out at 62.4(F) and reached 89.5. There were some spots of heavy fog on my drive downtown this morning. It was hazy all day, thought the sun peeked through sometimes.

I hit the Pharmacy while I was downtown and got in a walk around the park. I dropped a book in the return box at the library and stopped to pick up more beef sticks for Pip on my way to mom’s. I hand-washed dishes and scooped kitty litter.

I wrote more on my [community profile] smallfandomfest fic because the deadline is looming! I actually tossed almost 2/3 of what I’d written previously (of ~500 words) and added ~1,000 to that for a total of 1,200 words!! I DNF'd a Kindle cozy and started another.

I forgot to mention that I saw my first fawn on our property! Pip called, come here quick! It takes me a while to get off the bed where I was reading, even without the cat on my lap, but I managed to get a glimpse of the fawn cavorting after its mama just before they disappeared into the tall grass. So cute! Pip thinks we have four fawns, one mama with two, and two mamas with one. Not sure how he tells the two with one apart. o_O

They didn’t advertise (on Facebook or with signs), but they did do another chicken bbq today, so I stopped on the way home and got some. Yes, even though we just had some last weekend, lol!

Temps started out at 75.4(F) (two days ago it was 50 in the morning!) and already humid; it reached 86.9. It was overcast this morning and looked like it would rain, even though they changed the forecast to say no rain for today. The sun eventually came out and it got pretty warm.

I just signed up to participate in [personal profile] sunflower_auction to benefit Ukraine charities. I'm offering four fandoms:

Murder, She Wrote (tv): Jessica
Teen Wolf (tv): Peter/Chris and/or Derek/Stiles
MCU: Clint/Coulson and/or Steve/Bucky
Hawkeye (comics and/or tv): Clint/Coulson and/or Kate/Yelena

Will write: AUs and tropes (give me all the baby left on doorstep or different professions or met differently or coffee shop AUs), getting together, established relationship, kid!fic, curtain fic, fluff, crossovers . . .

Won't write: Major character death; partner betrayal; D/s; BDSM; A/B/O; bodily substances play (unless they’re a vampire); unhappy ending; explicit sex (sex is okay, but I’m less interested in writing super long sex scenes as I get older); character bashing.

I'm also willing to finish a WIP or write a sequel, so talk to me about that before you bid.

Also, for my f-list, I am willing to write in other fandoms not listed on the creator bid sheet, so talk to me about that before you bid if you might like something else!

Creator sign-ups are open through August 13; bidding opens on August 18. Check out this post if you want to participate.

I hit Walmart while I was downtown and got in a walk around the park. (I originally had no intention of going shopping today, but Pip needed something for the garage, so since I was already there I decided to pick up a few things I’d added to my list since Monday instead of wasting the trip.)

I folded yesterday’s load of laundry and got another load washed, dried and folded, hand-washed dishes, scooped kitty litter, and showered. I visited my mom (~10am – ~3pm); I stopped at the library to return a book (and talk to the librarian about it) on the way there and hit the bank drive-thru for mom on the way home.

(I did chuckle about the load of my clothes I folded because they reflected the weather the past few days perfectly: one pair of jeans with a long-sleeved t-shirt; two pair of capris with two t-shirts; two pair of shorts with two tank tops.)

I finished the Lily Adler book.

Temps started out at 69.8(F) (quite a difference from yesterday morning!) and reached 93.6. It was really hot out when I left mom’s.

I had a chiropractic appointment this morning. I hit Price Chopper and the Pharmacy while I was downtown and got in a walk around the park. I paid a short visit to mom on my way to visit my aunt. (A day early, but I am planning ahead in case I need to spend most of the day with mom tomorrow, post-procedure.)

I did a load of laundry (washed and dried), hand-washed dishes, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals, changed kitty litter, took the dogs for a walk, and paid a couple of bills online.

I took a nap and started the next Lily Adler book.

Temps started out at 49.8(F) (it was amusing to watch the temps bounce from 49.8 to 50.0 and back again, though I was not amused by such low morning temps; this is freaking fall weather) and reached 87.4. It got warm enough that we turned the AC back on in the bedroom. I do appreciate having AC when the temps get high, but I enjoyed the nights when we could just leave the windows open to sleep.

Have some photos I took today on the walk with the dogs: )

Rating: Teen
Length: 79,623
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply. Grim at times, as it depicts an aspect of WWII.
Creator Links: kristen999 on AO3, everybetty on LJ
Themes: Working together, Action/adventure, Teamwork, Friendship, Genfic, AU: historical, Novel-length

Summary: WWII-based AU. The Team as we know it has been transplanted to the South Pacific.

Reccer's Notes:
This tour de force is a novel-length story by [personal profile] kristen999, assisted by everybetty, an historical AU set in Papua-New Guinea, in WWII. It's pretty male-centric because of that, but does include Teyla as a local liaison with intel about the enemy. It's got lots of plot, great action and adventure, and an excellent sense of place - you can almost feel the tropical heat making you sweat and hear the mosquitoes whine. The story is illustrated throughout with lots of period photos from the time. It's told from all of the team's POVs, particularly John's (he's a pilot, of course, with Rodney and Ronon on his flight crew). Naturally, John gets thoroughly whumped, in the best genfic tradition. There's tons of atmosphere, friendship and teamwork, and it's a really great read.
